Supplement 39B & 39C: Hand-to-Hand and Combined Category 1 and 2 Sticking in 4/4 with Ostinatos | Part 2 of 4
Category 1 sticking creates odd groupings while Category 2 creates even ones — combining them opens up more grouping possibilities than either alone. Once the phrases feel controlled, start voicing the accents on the kit, supporting cymbal accents with the bass drum. Find a tempo you can hold steady, and aim to play musically rather than stiffly or mechanically.
From there, layer in one or more ostinatos to build hand/foot independence. Over time the goal is to be comfortable executing all of them, since they become genuinely useful across many kinds of grooves.
