Combining Category 1 and 2 sticking creates interesting note groupings from accent to accent — in this case, groups of 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, and 15. Try to recognize the underlying rhythm sequence as you practice; it can help with both understanding and execution. Watch the accent direction for proper limb motion, keep the flams uniform in sound and spacing, and feel free to voice the flam’s principal note on the kit with bass drum support under any cymbal voicing.
