Supplement 43A: 3-Note Grouping and Note Value Rate Progression in 3/4 | Part 1 of 3

A 3-note group mostly resolves within a single bar, with the exception of the quarter-note triplet, which takes two bars. The goal is the same up-and-down sequence from quarter notes to 32nd notes, and it can help to isolate the triplet values or the duple values separately until each feels secure — the 32nd note will likely be the most demanding, given the syncopation involved. Sticking and voicing are optional, though a consistent sticking approach can help early on; once the exercise feels secure, start voicing the accents on toms and cymbals, with the bass drum supporting any cymbal work. A good starting tempo is 74 bpm.
