Supplement 35C & 35D: Open and Closed Roll Development with Diddle Application | Part 4 of 4
These exercises apply various roll lengths in duple and triplet rhythm depending on tempo — practice both. The open double-stroke roll may want a different tempo than the closed roll; aim for evenness with each hand.
From there, this routine adds a diddle with each measure. Once you can play it evenly and smoothly, apply one of three options: accent the beat, accent the first diddle (or series of diddles), or accent the note that follows a diddle. Try a range of tempos, starting with whichever one you can control best, with the goal of matching sound between your right and left hand diddles.
