Supplement 32A, 32B & 32C: Hand-to-Hand and Category 4 Sticking Phrases with Foot Ostinatos in 4/4 and 12/8 | Part 1 of 3
These accent phrases continue developing proper hand motion, with more accents giving you more voicing options — always stay aware of which hand motion a given accent type calls for. As you get comfortable, start voicing the accents on the kit, using the bass drum to support cymbal voicing.
Category 4 sticking adds four single strokes followed by any number of double strokes, creating groupings of 6, 8, 10, and beyond (the double paradiddle lives in this category). Once the sticking flow feels natural, apply the same accenting and bass-drum-support approach.
Once both sticking types are under control, start layering in one or more foot ostinatos, keeping the focus on upper/lower body coordination and a good rhythmic flow — many of these ostinatos carry over directly into real playing situations.
