Hand-to-hand and Category 3 sticking can carry as many as three accents in succession, which means the third accent needs a wrist motion since it follows the whip motion of the first — the middle accent can still use a whip motion. Separating the motion of each hand helps you see what that hand’s motion and rhythm actually look like; once comfortable, begin voicing the accents on the toms, adding the bass drum when cymbals are used (Supplement 28B). Practice the hand-to-hand (#1–8) and Category 3 (#9–16) phrases in 4/4 and 12/8, voicing the accents on the toms and supporting cymbal use with the bass drum.
