Supplement 26A: 2-Bar Hand To Hand And Category 3 Stickings In 3/4 | Part 1 of 3

As in previous lessons, the accents of these 2-bar phrases in 3/4 are taken hand-to-hand and applied melodically on the drum set, with bass drum support when cymbals are used; some phrases include two or three single-stroke accents in succession, so take care with accent preparation and focus on limb motion and dynamic range (Supplement 26A, #1–4). Category 3 sticking — three single strokes followed by any number of double strokes — is then applied to the same 2-bar phrases, combining two and three accents; separate the hands onto different surfaces to watch and listen to each hand’s motion (Supplement 26A, #5–8). From there, apply a variety of 8th-note ostinatos in 3/4 to the patterns above: keep the focus on the hand motions while the feet play, with the hi-hat as the anchor that any bass drum rhythm must conform to (Supplement 26B). Play at a moderate tempo, voicing the accents melodically on the toms, and support cymbal use with the bass drum.
