Supplement 18A, 18B, & 18C: Hand To Hand Category 2 Stickings In 4/4 And 12/8 With Ostinatos | Part 1 of 3

The 16th-note and 8th-note phrases in 4/4 and 12/8 continue to explore different accent placements, sometimes away from the downbeat — motion is critical to executing them well. Support cymbal accents with the bass drum while the hi-hat holds a steady quarter-note pulse, and focus on the coordination between the hands and feet (Supplement 18A). The same care applies to the Category 2 sticking phrases: separate the hands where needed to focus on the motion of each, and remember that in 12/8 the even grouping of notes will syncopate the beat (Supplement 18B). From there, apply the ostinatos: start investigating each one and applying it to the phrases above in 4/4 (Supplement 18C), then in 12/8 (Supplement 18D), using 3-part counting and a metronome for the 12/8 work. Good timing and coordination — with all limbs moving together — are the goals throughout.
