Supplement 16A & 16B: Hand To Hand And Category 2 Stickings In 4/4 | Part 1 of 4

These phrases are built from even-numbered groupings of 4, 6 and 8 notes — larger groupings are possible by adding diddles or double strokes. Apply the accent motions learned in Playing Techniques Book 1, and when voicing on the drum set, use the bass drum to support cymbal accents (Supplement 16A). Category 2 sticking follows: two single strokes followed by any number of double strokes, automatically creating even-numbered groupings — the single paradiddle and paradiddle-diddle (including paradiddle-diddle-diddle) both live in this category. The single stroke(s) carry the accent while the unaccented double strokes tie the accents together; support cymbal accents with the bass drum and keep the hi-hat on the quarter-note pulse (Supplement 16B). Choose a tempo appropriate for your level, and remember the motions used are the same regardless of which sticking approach you're playing.
