This groove phrase works four consecutive bass drum notes into the pattern, calling for good focus on three ankle strokes followed by a downstroke. Play the hi-hat with one or two hands, using one of three phrasing options: no accents, an accented 8th-note 2-stroke phrasing, or an accented quarter-note 4-stroke motion. Choose a tempo that’s fast enough to support the ankle-down motion, and stay relaxed throughout.
