Supplement 27A: Applying Flams To Hand To Hand And Category 2 Stickings In 4/4 And 12/8 | Part 1 of 4

Continuing the development of flam strokes, hand-to-hand and Category 2 sticking are applied to 1-bar accent phrases presented earlier in the course. Keep grace notes low to the head, prepare accents with the proper prep motion, and remember that two or more accents in succession with the same hand use a whip accent followed by a wrist accent unless there’s time to prepare another whip stroke; stay as relaxed as possible on phrases with several notes in a row in the same hand. Because there are no wrist-accent motions in hand-to-hand sticking, the same page can be applied to both hand-to-hand and Category 2 sticking — it’s worth considering the Moeller motion for consecutive alternating accents, while watching for the wrist-accent motions specific to Category 2 sticking. Choose a tempo that matches your level, and once comfortable, voice the principal notes of the flam on the toms and cymbals (Supplement 27A).
