The Working Drummer’s Toolbox: Pro Tips from Drum Channel Drummers
Drum Channel staff drummers, Antoine Fadavi, Elias Vasquez, and Chris Grainger have honed their essentials over countless shows, refining their lists down to the must-haves. From drum keys and hardware pouches to the often-overlooked flashlight, their advice is clear: preparation is everything.
Here are just a few takeaways from their hour-long conversation. You can watch the full interview HERE!
How do you stay organized on the road?
Antoine: Label everything. I include my name, contact info, and even case dimensions on my gear. It shows respect for the crew and makes their jobs easier, which they remember. That’s what gets you rebooked.
Chris: Spread your most essential gear, such as sticks and drum keys, across different bags. That way, if one case gets lost, you still have something to work with.
Elias: Double-check everything before the show. That simple step has saved me so many times.
Who has influenced your approach to drumming and touring?
Antoine: When it comes to touring, all the techs on the road have influenced me a lot. I admire their work ethic, flexibility, and communication skills. I’ve learned so much from watching them work.
Chris: Growing up, I was deeply influenced by The Who’s legendary road crew, including Alan Rogan, Rex King, and Ravi Sharman. Their planning, and especially their robust mindset, was huge for me.
Elias: My mentors, including Gregg Bissonette, Alex Acuña, Al Velasquez, and others, have given me many tips and insights into drumming and touring. You can learn a lot from those who have done it for decades before you, even from their mistakes.
What’s an unconventional item you carry with you?
Antoine: A small candle. It’s my secret weapon for making rehearsal spaces or backstage areas a bit more pleasant.
Chris: Pedialyte or electrolytes are game changers. They help you bounce back after intense shows.
Elias: Extra socks and a spare shirt. It’s not glamorous, but you’ll thank yourself after a sweaty gig.
What advice would you give to drummers preparing for gigs?
Antoine: Be organized, keep track of your progress, follow up, and stay open-minded. Try to understand the artist and the other musicians in the band and what they expect of you.
Chris: Be prepared for the unexpected. Things will go wrong—your gear might break, or something will be missing. Adaptability is key.
Elias: Focus on serving the music rather than showcasing your skills. Check your ego at the door, and do your best to bring the music and production to life. Always prepare mentally and physically—repetition is key!
