Remembering Walfredo Reyes Sr.
There are musical legends and musical pioneers, and Walfredo Reyes Sr. is both.
It is not only what he played, but how he combined the drum set with percussion, and traveled back and forth from New York to Cuba bringing those musical cultures together. He was truly an inventor and visionary. It is often said one’s legacy will live on, and in this case it is literally true.
Not only with his amazing family, but with every drummer percussionist who should learn where it came from. His contribution to music and the instrument will not be forgotten. Every time we got together, I somehow felt I was with royalty. I can’t explain it, but I am not the only one.
I was about to say, “Rest in Peace Walfredo Reyes Sr.,” but I can hear him say, “Peace? Where is the percussion?!”
He will be dearly missed!
