Supplement 52B: Hand Ostinatos And Rhythmic Coordination | Part 2 of 3

This is your first pass at hand ostinatos and rhythmic coordination: a lead-hand pattern on the hi-hat or cymbal that the rest of your limbs lock in around, not the other way. Pick a hi-hat or cymbal pattern, choose a tempo, then work through the kick and snare figures underneath it — later lessons will add more bass drum activity, so get the lead-hand phrasing solid first. The goal is playing that sounds exciting and in control, not stiff, so leave room to improvise by combining figures into longer phrases.
