Supplement 31A: Flams Applied to Hand-to-Hand and Category 2 Sticking in 4/4 and 12/8 | Part 1 of 3

As flam development continues, keep the grace notes low to the head, use the hand motion that matches the accent type, and stay as relaxed as possible for the best tone. Practice the flam exercises in both 4/4 and 12/8 — hand-to-hand first, then Category 2 sticking. As you get comfortable, start voicing the flam’s principal note around the kit, and add the bass drum for support whenever you move that note to a cymbal.
