Supplement 25A: Hand To Hand And Category 3 Stickings In 12/8 | Part 1 of 5

As in previous lessons, the accents of these 1-bar phrases in 12/8 are taken hand-to-hand and applied melodically on the drum set, with bass drum support when cymbals are used; some phrases include two or three single-stroke accents in succession, so take care with accent preparation and focus on limb motion and dynamic range (Supplement 25A, #1–6). Category 3 sticking — three single strokes followed by any number of double strokes — is then applied to the same 1-bar phrases in 12/8, combining two and three accents; separate the hands onto different surfaces to watch and listen to each hand’s motion (Supplement 25A, #7–12).
