Supplement 24A & 24B: Hand To Hand And Category 3 Stickings | Part 1 of 4

As in previous lessons, the accents of these 1-bar phrases in 3/4 are taken hand-to-hand and applied melodically on the drum set, with bass drum support when cymbals are used; some phrases include two or three single-stroke accents in succession, so take care with accent preparation and stay focused on limb motion, always preparing for the next note (Supplement 24A). Category 3 sticking follows: three single strokes followed by any number of double strokes, producing an odd-numbered group — most typically 5 or 7 notes. It’s applied in 3/4 here for a natural resolution, though it can be used in any time signature, and is useful whenever more accents are wanted in an odd grouping; separate the hands onto different surfaces to focus on each hand’s motion (Supplement 24B). From there, apply the 3/4 ostinato foot patterns to the phrases above, staying attentive to hand-and-foot coordination and choosing ostinatos that are manageable — be mindful they don’t interfere with proper hand and body motion (Supplement 24C).
