Supplement 23A: Applying Flams To Hand To Hand And Category 1 Stickings In 4/4 | Part 1 of 3

To continue developing the flam stroke, hand-to-hand and Category 1 sticking are applied to 1-bar accent phrases in 4/4. Keep grace notes low to the head, prepare accents with the proper lifting motion, and remember that two or more accents in succession with the same hand use a whip (Moeller) accent followed by a wrist accent — unless there’s time to prepare another whip stroke. Stay as relaxed as possible, especially on phrases with several notes in a row in the same hand, and voice the principal notes of the flam on the toms (Supplement 23A). The flat flam is also introduced here: instead of one hand preceding the other, both hands land in unison but on different instruments, avoiding a canceling effect — it’s especially useful when moving to the cymbal, supported by the bass drum.
