Supplement 22E: Ankle-Down Development With The Hi Hat On The Quarter Note | Part 3 of 3
This exercise’s rhythm moves across the beat, creating a syncopated feel that turns the beat around each time, making coordination a real challenge; the quick prep motion needed for the next set of double strokes has to be a prime focus, or the phrasing and timing of the rhythm will suffer. Pick a tempo you can handle that’s still fast enough to use the ankle-down motion (Supplement 22E). This exercise, first presented in Lesson 21, calls for both the ankle-down motion and an immediate prep motion — practice the motions slowly first to understand each component, then bring it up to a tempo where the motion is used appropriately, keeping every rotation of the rhythm consistent in motion, sound and phrasing.
