Supplement 22A, 22B & 22C: 2-Bar Hand To Hand And Category 2 Stickings In 12/8 With Ostinatos | Part 1 of 3

As in previous lessons, the accents of the 2-bar phrases are taken hand-to-hand and applied melodically on the drum set, with bass drum support when cymbals are used; some phrases include two single-stroke accents in succession, so take care with accent preparation and focus on limb motion and dynamic range (Supplement 22A). The Category 2 sticking phrases require the same focus, and because successive Moeller motions with the same hand aren’t possible at faster tempos, use a wrist motion for the second accent instead — separating the hands onto different surfaces helps you watch and listen to the motion of each (Supplement 22B). From there, add foot ostinatos in 12/8 to all of the phrases above: keep the chosen ostinato simple enough that it doesn’t interfere with your focus on the hand motions and accents, or feel free to create your own ostinato outside the curriculum if it suits you better (Supplement 22C).
