Supplement 20A, 20B & 20C: 2-Bar Hand To Hand And Category 2 Stickings In 4/4 And 12/8 With Ostinatos | Part 1 of 3

As in previous lessons, the accents of these 2-bar phrases are taken hand-to-hand and applied melodically on the drum set, including bass drum support when cymbals are used. Some phrases include two single-stroke accents in succession, so take care with accent preparation and focus on limb motion and the dynamic range between accented and unaccented notes (Supplement 20A). The same care applies to the 2-bar Category 2 sticking phrases — some also include two accents in a row — where separating the hands onto different playing surfaces helps you watch and listen to each hand’s motion; because you can’t use the Moeller motion for two same-hand accents in a row, some accents require a wrist turn instead (Supplement 20B). From there, add foot ostinatos of your choice to all of the phrases above, continuing to build coordination, independence and practical application of basic foot patterns (Supplement 20C). Choose tempos appropriate to your level, and focus on good coordination and balance.
