As in the previous lesson, hand-to-hand sticking is applied on the drum set, now with accents that move away from the downbeat for a more challenging execution. The bass drum supports the accents when cymbals are used, while the hi-hat keeps time — pay special attention to the coordination between bass drum and hi-hat, and between bass drum and hands. Separate the hands if it helps you focus on the motion of each (Supplement 19A). Once the hands function in a disciplined manner, add the feet: apply the ostinato patterns from previous lessons, choosing either one ostinato to apply across the hand phrases or one hand phrase to apply across several ostinatos — the eventual goal is working through every combination (Supplement 19C for 4/4 foot ostinatos, and 19D for 12/8).
