Supplement 17A: Hand To Hand Stickings In 4/4 And 12/8 | Part 1 of 4

These phrases continue the hand-to-hand approach, now with both single strokes accented in some exercises — keep right- and left-hand accents uniform in motion, sound and volume. When voicing accents on the cymbals, support with the bass drum, and feel free to add a diddle stroke to any unaccented single note. Always count in four as you play. This lesson also introduces 12/8: because of the even grouping of notes, the syncopation and cross-rhythm add a new challenge — remember that any 12/8 phrase sounds the same converted to 4/4 with 8th-note triplets. A metronome is strongly recommended (Supplement 17A).
