The legendary Jeff Porcaro would have turned 67 today. In remembrance of Jeff, we asked Jim Keltner to share a few words to honor Jeff’s life and legacy: “Early on, Jeffrey and I would talk about drummers a lot. He enjoyed analyzing a part that someone played, and what it did for the song. That’s why I always loved turning him onto stuff that I would hear that would knock me out. Later, when I came to the realization that we drummers play who we are inside, not just what our credentials say about us, I realized what a tremendous blessing it was to have a young Jeff Porcaro enter my life and become every bit the inspiration to me, as he always said I was to him. His gifts as a player have been obviously very well documented, and so as you study and appreciate the beauty in his playing, know that is exactly what he was like as a person.” – Jim Keltner // Join us in celebrating Jeff’s legacy with our new Jeff Porcaro Stories video. // Photo by Peter Figen

Today would’ve marked Joe Porcaro’s 91st birthday. During a hall-of-fame career that covered nearly 50 years, Joe played on thousands of movie soundtracks, TV shows, records and commercials. Neil Peart would’ve turned 68 years old had he been alive today. Peart received numerous awards for his musical performances, including an induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983, making him the youngest person ever so honored. Let’s take a moment to reflect on his artistic genius and the legacy he left behind, by watching his course Frontiers of Composition and Articulation.

During a hall-of-fame career that covered nearly 50 years, Joe Porcaro played on thousands of movie soundtracks, TV shows, records and commercials. Joe told us the story of how he happened to end up in Los Angeles. “After growing up in Hartford, Connecticut and establishing myself as a drummer, percussionist and teacher, I was looking for a change. Emil Richards was already working in LA so I called him up one day and he said ‘Come on out.’ I went out to Los Angeles and hung out with him for a week. The first day Emil got up at 7 or 8 in the morning to go to MGM from 9:00 until noontime. Then he’d go to Sunset Sound to do an hour jingle. Then he went to United Artists to do a record date, 3 hours. Then, at night, he’d go to Capitol to record with a big artist like Frank Sinatra. This happened every day of the week. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I said ‘Oh my God, this is for me. I think I can handle it.’ I went back to Connecticut, canceled all my gigs, packed up my wife and kids and drove out to California.”

This video was filmed when Jim was 82 years young, and as you can see, his excitement for life and drumming had not diminished. Without question, Jim has given more lessons than any other drummer in the world, as it would be impossible to run into him without shortly getting into a subject that would lead towards him sharing invaluable information with you. This conversation is an excellent example of that. Listen and learn from one of the most iconic drummer educators of all time. (July 23, 1919 – July 4, 2009)

“Two years ago today, we lost the great Neil Peart. His loss was devastating to the entire drumming community. Before every tour, Neil would block out a Drum Channel studio for a full month to practice before Rush rehearsals even started. One big lesson I definitely learned from Neil is to always be prepared. While he was at DC we would have lunch every day in my office and he would always want to know what other drummers might be coming in to visit or record. It was always amazing to me that he was just as excited to meet his drumming idols as they were to meet him. Neil cared greatly about education for drummers and the importance of having a good private teacher. He almost quit drumming at one point but his teacher encouraged him to keep going. There is a lot that we can learn from Neil as a person and a drummer. We will do our best to continue our mission… as he wanted it.” — Don Lombardi

Remo is a true pioneer in the drum industry. He was a dear friend and an important part of the success of DW. In our early years, he mentored me in business decisions and was always encouraging that we had a good chance of success. I learned having great ideas, and then turning them into a successful business requires two skill sets. No better example than Remo when you look at the mylar head and how he turned that invention into a successful business almost overnight. I think we both felt being drummers was a huge asset to our business lives. Remo was a great player and the original drummer in the legendary Lighthouse Allstars. – Don

Legendary drummer/ DC Artist In Residence, Terry Bozzio, explains the permutations of triplets and sixteenth notes, demonstrating how you can orchestrate them on the drums using various ostinatos. “Rhythm 1” is the first of 3 courses on Terry’s approach to independence and ostinato development. “Rhythm 2” and “Rhythm 3” are coming soon to Drum Channel.

“DC Artist-in-Residence,” Terry Bozzio, expands on eighth-note triplet and 16th-note permutations previously discussed in Rhythm1 and adds ostinato variations to challenge your coordination and creativity. Terry progressively plays these basic ostinato patterns on a pad, a 5-piece kit and then his monster kit— bringing home the message that the music, not the size of the drum set, is what matters. Start slowly, and gradually increase speed as you learn from the master in this incredible course.

The third system, which expands on Terry’s previous courses, Rhythm 1 and 2, is now available! In Rhythm 3, Terry Bozzio expands on the different mixed sticking permutations in both the triple and duple realm by integrating unique ostinato and limb patterns he has applied in his own studies. Upon completing this course, you will have learned a strong foundation for applying rhythmic ideas, allowing you to free up your limbs and coordination when soloing and improvising.

Rhythm master, Efrain Toro, brings his friends out for an incredible Masterclass to explore harmonic rhythm. Together with four different groups, he demonstrates how you can start to apply the principles from his book and course, “Rhythm In Essence,” available in Drum Channel’s Store. In anticipation of Virgil Donati’s second “Rhythmic Facility” course, coming soon, we wanted to share the first recent course introducing “Dotted Eighth Notes.” In this course, Virgil offers his advanced system that covers, how a dot affects the value of a note, how it relates to understanding more complex polyrhythms, and how it can create syncopated hypnotic rhythms.
