The legendary Jeff Porcaro would have turned 67 today. In remembrance of Jeff, we asked Jim Keltner to share a few words to honor Jeff’s life and legacy: “Early on, Jeffrey and I would talk about drummers a lot. He enjoyed analyzing a part that someone played, and what it did for the song. That’s why I always loved turning him onto stuff that I would hear that would knock me out. Later, when I came to the realization that we drummers play who we are inside, not just what our credentials say about us, I realized what a tremendous blessing it was to have a young Jeff Porcaro enter my life and become every bit the inspiration to me, as he always said I was to him. His gifts as a player have been obviously very well documented, and so as you study and appreciate the beauty in his playing, know that is exactly what he was like as a person.” – Jim Keltner // Join us in celebrating Jeff’s legacy with our new Jeff Porcaro Stories video. // Photo by Peter Figen

Today would’ve marked Joe Porcaro’s 91st birthday. During a hall-of-fame career that covered nearly 50 years, Joe played on thousands of movie soundtracks, TV shows, records and commercials. During a hall-of-fame career that covered nearly 50 years, Joe Porcaro played on thousands of movie soundtracks, TV shows, records and commercials. Joe told us the story of how he happened to end up in Los Angeles. “After growing up in Hartford, Connecticut and establishing myself as a drummer, percussionist and teacher, I was looking for a change. Emil Richards was already working in LA so I called him up one day and he said ‘Come on out.’ I went out to Los Angeles and hung out with him for a week. The first day Emil got up at 7 or 8 in the morning to go to MGM from 9:00 until noontime. Then he’d go to Sunset Sound to do an hour jingle. Then he went to United Artists to do a record date, 3 hours. Then, at night, he’d go to Capitol to record with a big artist like Frank Sinatra. This happened every day of the week. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I said ‘Oh my God, this is for me. I think I can handle it.’ I went back to Connecticut, canceled all my gigs, packed up my wife and kids and drove out to California.”
