These phrases combine hand-to-hand sticking with Category 2 and 4 combinations in 4/4 and 12/8 — remember that Category 4 sticking is four singles followed by any number of doubles. Watch the accent direction to know whether you need a Moeller or wrist motion, then start voicing the accents around the kit, using the bass drum to support anything you move to a cymbal. Once the hand phrases are solid, layer in a foot ostinato underneath — start with whichever pattern doesn’t disrupt the hands, and build toward the others as your independence grows.
