Supplement 34A: Note Grouping and Note Value Rates in 4/4 | Part 1 of 2

This is the first in a series of exercises built around a group of notes (starting with four) applied across a sequence of note value rates — quarter notes subdividing in order down to 32nd notes, then expanding back out, with the triplet value included along the way. The goal is control over shifting note value rates, something that eventually carries into real playing. The accent marks the start of each group, though voicing can shift the emphasis based on tone and pitch — stay aware of where that first note falls so you don’t lose track of the downbeat. Sticking is optional; you may want to keep it consistent across note values at first, then explore other options based on how you’re voicing the kit. The order runs: quarter notes, quarter-note triplets, 8th notes, 8th-note triplets, 16th notes, 16th-note triplets, 32nd notes. Keep time on the hi-hat with the quarter-note pulse (or a metronome, if that’s easier), with the bass drum reserved for supporting cymbal voicing.
