Biography
Born in Wales, Steve moved to London to attend University College London and to benefit from the city’s musical heritage. Steve graduated with a degree in psychology, but began working as a studio drummer. After paying his dues performing with a wide variety of bands, Steve began regularly recording on film, television, commercial sessions, and with the BBC radio orchestra.
In the 1980s, Steve highlighted his skills in his work with pop band Brother Beyond. Initially, they hired him as a temporary drummer, but before long, he became the regular drummer. With Steve in the drum seat, Brother Beyond recorded two albums that went platinum in Britain and two singles that became Top 20 hits in the U.S. After three years, the band dismantled, and Steve returned to freelance studio performances. Once again, skilled drumming got him gigs in many genres including fusion, pop, and World Music. His performance with Zaire’s Papa Wemba on Voyageur garnered many awards.
In 1995, Steve began performing with the lively and unpredictable Duran Duran. Steve recorded and toured the world with the band for five years. He put his own spin on the band’s prior work and often played their old music with compelling new twists, much to the delight of fans. During his tenure with Duran Duran, Steve also worked with Jeff Beck on the record Who Else! and toured the U.S., Japan, South America, and Europe. In 2005, Steve released Flashman--a project where Steve played all the featured instruments, joined by London singer/songwriter Renn on vocals, and featured a guest appearance from Jeff Beck.
Steve is also a composer and has written music for stage and television. As a clinician for Zildjian, Steve has toured Europe, South America, and Asia.
