Biography

Born in San Diego, California, Ilan Rubin first began “toying” around with drumming after discovering his father’s 1968 Silver Sparkle Ludwig kit in the garage. Ilan was only eight at the time. After a few months and a little instruction from his father, Ilan had taught himself how to play. He and his older brothers began jamming and together formed F.o.N., Ilan’s first band.

1997 found Ilan recording F.o.N.’s self-produced demo album, entitled "Freak of Nature," featuring seven original songs. By 1998, Ilan and the band had begun to take off, recording on compilation albums for Rhino Records, working on their second album, "Hooked on Fonix," interviewing, touring as well as dealing with line up changes. The band didn’t slow down and in 1999, performed at both Van’s Warped Tour and Woodstock – where Ilan found his way into the Guiness Book of World Records as the youngest person to play at this historic festival. Ilan was only eleven years old.

Still at the age of eleven, he submitted a video to Modern Drummer Magazine, taken of him doing a solo during an F.o.N. performance. This video earned Ilan the title of “Best Undiscovered Drummer Under the Age of 18.” The winner of the 18-and-over category came from Argentina, and both drummers were invited to perform at the 2000 Modern Drummer Festival, by which time Ilan had turned 12.

Ilan completed his high school degree (with honors) while touring the country in a van with his next band, Denver Harbor. Ilan played on their 2004 release, “Scenic.” After the band split in 2006, Ilan began playing in the Welsh band, Lostprophets. He can be heard on two of the twelve songs from the album Liberation Transmission. With Lostprophets, Ilan had the opportunity to perform to sold out crowds and festivals all over the world.

Touted as a "true solo project," the band, The New Regime, consists solely of Ilan. A multi-instrumentalist Rubin wrote and recorded every note of bass, drums, guitar, piano and vocals on The New Regime's 2008 debut, Coup. In between helping write the latest Lostprophets album and a string of tour dates, Ilan nurtured the idea of his own project. All material for the album was written and recorded on Lostprophets downtime. Ilan himself faced a challenge – the talented musican had never sang before. After adjusting to this new role, Ilan wrote and recorded seven songs in his garage. Ilan kept the bands details a mystery at first, releasing anonymous videos on the web. "I wanted people to listen to it and make up their minds based on the music—not who it was by, or what band I'm in." The videos received major radio and press attention within a week.

In late 2008, Trent Reznor invited Ilan to join Nine Inch Nails, mentioning that Ilan had “blown him away” after watching him at Reading/Leeds Festival in 2007. In November, Ilan rehearsed with Nine Inch Nails on their “Lights In The Sky” tour following Josh Freese’s departure.
