Biography
When Larry Aberman was ten years old, the drummer for his brother’s band would often leave his kit at their house after rehearsals. One day, young Larry grabbed a floor tom and began to play along with one of his records. Playing in perfect sync to the Hawaii 5-0 theme, Larry was hooked.
As a child, Larry Aberman studied under Armand Santarelli in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before moving to New York City to enroll at The High School of Music and Art at fourteen. In New York, Larry began a life-long mentorship with educator Justin DiCioccio. After high school, Larry learned percussion from John Beck at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester. Larry studied orchestra and also played in the Eastman Jazz Ensemble. While at Eastman, Larry accompanied Wynton Marsalis on the recording Carnaval (which received a Grammy nomination).
Larry returned to New York City where he studied at the Drummer’s Collective with Kim Plainfield and Kenwood Dennard. In NYC, Larry worked a great deal: he performed with the Mark Morris Dance Company and played Broadway shows; he recorded with David Mann and Jeff Beal; and he toured with Pierce Turner and Grayson Hugh. After building connections in the New York music scene, Larry recorded the double Grammy awarded CD "Family Style" with Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan as well as CD's with Ric Ocasek, David Lee Roth, Lionel Richie, Adam Ant, Grayson Hugh, and performed with Nile Rodgers, Howard Hewitt, Miki Howard, Dianne Reeves, Nick Lowe, and John Hiatt. Somehow, he also found time to tour with Foreigner.
Larry relocated to Los Angeles and began composing and recording music for commercial jingles, movie soundtracks, and television programs. He also recorded with Ben Harper, Daniel Lanois, Aaron Neville, Paul Williams, Wil Jennings, Joe Sample, Wild Orchid, Jennifer Paige, Danielle Brisebois, New Radicals, John Taylor (Duran Duran), Michael Sembello, Kelly Willis and Bob Clearmountain. Larry performed live with Hiram Bullock, Ivan Neville, Simon Lebon and John Taylor of Duran Duran and in studios with Marcus Miller, Dean Parks, Lenny Castro, as well as others. Larry toured extensively with both Joe Sample and Jonatha Brooke.
Shortly thereafter, Larry made yet another move and is now in Las Vegas performing with Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity at the New York, New York Hotel. Larry says the show is constantly changing and requires him to utilize years of education while performing each day. During his weekends (Wednesday and Thursday), he frequently records in Los Angeles or from his home studio.
