Biography

Tomas Haake is best known for performing with Swedish metal band Meshuggah. The band’s defining approach to odd, permutable, and cyclic patterns over a straight 4/4 signature is the perfect venue for Tomas Haake’s exceptionally technical playing.

Even alone, Tomas Haake's playing is full of polyrhythms backed by a constant 4/4 beat. Tomas Haake arranges his cymbals in stack figures, eliciting unique sounds from them individually and as groups. Now, his characteristic sound is the backbone of Meshuggah. In addition to providing the rhythmic backbone for the band, Tomas also writes most of their lyrics and frequently provides vocals.

A software instrument called DrumKit From Hell Superior samples Tomas’s kit extensively and showcases his full range. Tomas Haake actually performed all the hits himself. The software is widely employed—Clawfinger, Ziltoid the Omniscient, and Meshuggah have all used it. When Meshuggah used it to program the tracks for Catch Thirty-Three, Tomas didn’t record a single live track for the album.
