Biography

Todd Sucherman was surrounded by music from birth. His father played drums nightly in a big band and his brothers Paul and Joel played piano. The Sucherman Brothers, Todd on drums, Paul on piano, and Joel on newly-acquired bass, got their first paid gig when Todd was just six years old. They played Beatles covers like "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Michelle." The brotherly trio continued to play together, occasionally with other musicians joining them. Teenager Todd and his older brothers played at a summer resort in Wisconsin for five years, alongside comedians, magicians, dancers, jugglers, and psychics.

Todd Sucherman attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for nine months in 1987 and 1988, and when he returned to Chicago he played tons of gigs and studio sessions. Todd Sucherman became a well established first-call studio drummer on the Chicago recording scene. At this time, Todd met Keith Marks, who ultimately introduced him to Styx. During John Panozzo's illness, the other members of Styx asked Todd to "ghost drum" on "Lady 95." After John passed away, Todd permanently joined the band in 1996 and continues to drum with Styx today.

Though dedicated to Styx, Todd Sucherman continues to record and tour with other artists whenever he has the time. During a Styx hiatus, Todd worked with Brian Wilson. Todd reflects very fondly on his time with Brian, particularly because that was when he met his wife, Taylor Mills.

  • Todd calls the drums "truly my first love…I adored the way they looked, felt, smelled, and sounded."
  • He reads "Full Moon" by Dougal Butler once a year. "It's the account of the last ten years of Keith Moon's life as told by his personal assistant. Completely hysterical and ultimately sad, it's the greatest 'rock story' ever told."
  • Todd recorded the trailer for the film, "The Negotiator," which was filmed in his hometown of Chicago. The building featured in the movie is 77 West Wacker Drive (the R. R. Donnelly Building).
