Biography

Los Angeles native Stephen Andrew Perkins started playing the drums when he was eight years old. Five years later he bought his first real drum kitóa five-piece Ludwig set with Zildjian cymbals. Stephen Perkins studied under Jim Engle and Joel Gallant.

As a teenager, Stephen Perkins and Dave Navarro formed the band Dizaster and played locally throughout Los Angeles. In 1986, Stephen and Dave both joined the alt-rock outfit, Jane's Addiction.

Jane's Addiction released a self-titled album (a live recording from the Roxy) in 1987. They were a quick underground favorite in Los Angeles. Their live performances were packed full of energy and blends of punk, funk, metal, and jazz echoed in their acerbic ballads. After recording two more albums, Nothing Shocking and Ritual De Lo Habitual, the band dismantled in 1991. Although Jane's Addiction's tenure was short, they brought alternative music to a wide audience.

The following year, Stephen Perkins joined Suicidal Tendencies' side project, Infectious Grooves, for a short time. In 1993, Stephen Perkins created Porno for Pyros (with Perry Farrell) and released a self-titled album that same year. Stephen Perkins also created Banyan in 1995. In 1997, Flea, Dave, and Stephen reunited for a Jane's Addiction tour, a movie, and an album. In 1999, Stephen Perkins joined Tommy Lee's Methods of Mayhem for one tour.

In 2000, Stephen Perkins rejoined Janeís Addiction on tour for their second reunion tour. Three years later, Stephen Perkins drummed on Strays. It was the first Jane's Addiction studio album in more than a decade.

In 2005, Stephen Perkins created The Panic Channel and recorded an album with Dave Navarro, Chris Chaney, and Steve Isaacs.

Stephen Perkins has performed with Rage Against the Machine, No Doubt, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jerry Cantrell, Rancid, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Rob Wasserman, Peter Murphy, Class of 99, Love and Rockets, Camp Freddy, Hell Ride, and No Material. Throughout Stephen Perkins' many endeavors, his drumming style is consistently exoticóhe regularly incorporates polyrhythms and African elements.

In addition to working as a performer, Stephen Perkins has created drum therapy circles. Stephen Perkins and Joey Klaparda invented Go Jo Bags, a percussion instrument used in music therapy.
