Biography

Sherrie Maricle grew up in mid-state New York, where she studied the clarinet and cello in the fourth grade. After just two years, Sherrie Maricle abandoned them for the snare drum. The moment she heard a Buddy Rich concert, her life’s course was set.

While studying at Binghamton University, Sherrie Maricle played drums professionally in an array of musical settings. Sherrie Maricle earned her bachelor’s degree in 1985, and then she went on to earn a master’s degree of the arts in jazz performance and, ultimately, a doctorate of philosophy in jazz performance and composition from New York University.

In the early 1990s, Sherrie Maricle created The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, a big band of talented women performers. Sherrie Maricle leads the band with the excitement and force of traditional big bands, but guides the performers towards modern progressive sounds and originality. Sherrie Maricle also performs with her quintet FIVE PLAY. Both groups have garnered high critical acclaim for performances at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and countless other venues around the world.

Sherrie Maricle regularly plays with DIVA and FIVE PLAY, and she also performs with The New York Pops, where she is the director of education for the orchestra. She runs a private drum and percussion studio, and she is a frequent clinician. Sherrie Maricle created The Rhythm, Rhyme, and Rap Workshop for children and is an active freelance performer. Sherrie Maricle also composes and arranges both jazz and classical music.
