Biography

Los Tigres del Norte achieved international acclaim as musical storytellers for generations of Latin immigrants. The group uses ëcorrido, a story celebrating the quest for truth, justice, and opportunity, in their music to tell the stories of millions.

The band started in San Jose, California, with a group of young brothers who left their hometown of Rosa Morado in Mexico for the United States. On their way north, an immigration officer called them ëlos tigres' (little tigers), a nickname for kids. The brothers, Jorge, Raul, and Hernán Hernández, and their cousin, Oscar Lara started Los Tigres Del Norte in San Jose as teenagers playing in local cantinas.

An upstart record label discovered Los Tigres in the 1970s; the label suggested they modify their acoustic sound into of more modern electric instrumentation. Their first hit in 1971 'Contrabanda y Traicion' (Contraband and Betrayal), told the story of a drug-running couple and resonated with the growing Mexican population in California.

Lot Tigres' message is always socially aware and spreads a valuable moral lesson. Using their songs and lyrics, the band tells stories of struggles of immigrants and workers pursuing the great American dream, love, loss, and survival in an imperfect world. The band brought the ancient musical style, norteno, into the popular modern mainstream by infusing it with bolero, cumbia, rock rhythms, and waltzes.

Los Tigres, after performing for more than thrity years, have recorded more than fifty-five albums and have been nominated for fourteen traditional Grammy awards and four Latin Grammys. Their global record sales exceed 32 million copies. In 1993, they performed before an unprecedented crowd of 200,000 outside of the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Recently, the Smithsonian Institute dedicated a traveling exhibit chronicling the artistic contributions of Los Tigres.

  • Los Tigres del Norte made a cameo appearance and contributed to the soundtrack of the 2008 film, La Misma Luna. The film is about a mother who works illegally in Los Angeles to send money to her son and his grandmother in rural Mexico.
  • "Los Tigres del Norte, the world's premier Norteño band, made an entrance worthy of rock stars.. Thousands stood for hours… Their sturdiest fans were still standing during a generous encore two hours later, with couples still dancing... cheek to cheek for La Causa to the very end… Artistically, Los Tigres are a first-class act" -Los Angeles Times concert review.
  • "...norteño icons Los Tigres del Norte [are] arguably the most influential regional Mexican group in the United States… Among all the Latin musicians who either live in the United States or make their living there, Los Tigres del Norte have most consistently touched upon immigration and social class issues in their music" -Billboard, May 13, 2006.
