Biography

Matt Sorum was born November 19, 1960, in Long Beach California. Inspired by music at a young age, his early influences included Ringo Starr, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Doors, and his mother, a music teacher. When he was just fourteen, Matt Sorum was playing at LA clubs like The Starwood, The Whiskey a Go Go, and Gazzarriís Crazy Horse.

When he graduated from high school, Matt Sorum pursued music wholeheartedly and, after jamming at what is now The Viper Room, he met guitarist Gregg Wright and joined him on tour. After playing in New Orleans, Matt returned to Los Angeles, where he performed and recorded with various artists, including Shaun Cassidy, Belinda Carlisle, and King Solomon Burke. Matt Sorum met Tori Amos during one of his many gigs and, together, they created the band, Y Kant Tori Read.

In 1988 Matt auditioned and was invited to join The Cult. Matt Sorum toured with them for two years before Duff McKagan and Slash of Guns N' Roses saw him play and invited him to join GNR. His first performance with the band was Rock in Rio II in front of thousands of people. Matt Sorum joined GNR for their world-wide three-year tour (192 shows) and recorded multiple albums (selling thirty million copies). GNR members Slash, Matt, and Gilby Clarke formed Slashís Snakepit and recorded the 1995 album Its Five OíClock Somwhere. Matt Sorum left GNR in 1997 and pursued a variety of interests, including producing both film scores and artists. In 1999, Matt reunited with The Cult for a tour and album recording.

Back in Los Angeles, Matt Sorum and former GNR band mates Slash and Duff McKagan created the band Velvet Revolver with Scott Weiland on vocals until recently and Dave Kushner on guitar. Velvet Revolver is wildly popular and regularly tours and records.

Matt also frequently works with band Camp Freddy with Dave Navarro and recorded a solo album, Hollywood Zen.

  • In 2005, Matt joined designer Max Noce to create and "elegant, innovative line of rock-inspired couture." In March 2008, they opened a boutique in Los Angeles called Sorum Noce.
  • "Sorum Noce is the chic and stylish gentlemen's couture line from Matt Sorum and Max Noce. The clothes strike a balance between classy, refined style and rock n' roll attitude. The suits, leather jackets and shirts possess a simplicity that's vibrantly individualistic. Each piece stands out, and the pair has crafted one of the few high-end gentlemen's brands that speaks, 'distinguished, yet real.'" - Rick Florino
