Biography

Duffy Jackson’s father, legendary jazz bassist Chubby Jackson, gave Duffy his first drum set when he was four years old. Duffy Jackson's father respected Duffy’s feeling for rhythm at a young age. Before he was ten years old, Duffy Jackson appeared on the national television shows I’ve Got a Secret and The Mike Douglas Show, where he performed as a Jazz Wunderkind. Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Louie Bellson all tutored Duffy.

Immediately after graduating from high school, Duffy Jackson headed to California to continue pursuing music. Duffy Jackson played with Milt Jackson and Ray Brown at Shelly’s Manhole. Duffy went on to record with Monty Alexander, tour with Lena Horne, and perform on television with Sammy Davis Jr. Since then, Duffy Jackson has played with Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Lionel Hampton, Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich, and Harry "Sweets" Edison.

After the era of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, Duffy Jackson became the most prominent big band drummer in the United States, assisted by his brash and dynamic playing style.

But Duffy Jackson is more than a great performer—he is an expert entertainer. Duffy composes music and plays the keyboard, bass, vibraphone, and even sings. He is also an educator at Valdosta State College, The University of Miami, and Youngstown University. Duffy Jackson shares his knowledge with students of all skill levels, from elementary school lessons to master classes.
