Biography

Born in Ohio, David Eric Grohl grew up in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Springfield, Virginia, with his mother and older sister. Dave Grohl created his first band when he was ten years old; Dave played a one-string guitar and his friend banged on pots and pans. Shortly thereafter, Dave started taking guitar lessons and recording himself on a boom box.

After attending his first punk rock concert in 1982, Dave dove headfirst into punk. Dissatisfied with the drummer in his high school punk band Freak Baby, Dave taught himself to play the drums.

Dave then drummed with several punk, hardcore, and alternative bands in the Washington area. He dropped out of high school to play with Scream for four years, touring extensively and recording live and studio albums. After Scream disbanded, Dave joined Seattle alternative band Nirvana with Curt Cobain and Krist Novoselic.

Nirvana's second album (Dave's first with the band), Nevermind, catapulted the grunge band to worldwide success. As he spent more time with the band, Dave contributed songwriting and occasionally played guitar.

After Cobain's unexpected death in the spring of 1994, Dave recorded a solo demo, playing all the instruments himself. During this time he played with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam a couple times. When several major record labels expressed interest in his demos, Dave recruited Pat Smear, William Goldsmith, and Nate Mendel and they created Foo Fighters.

Foo Figthers' second album, The Coulour and the Shape, guaranteed the band's popularity. They toured extensively and underwent several personnel changes. Despite a busy schedule, Dave frequently worked on solo and side projects. For instance, in 2002, he recorded Songs for the Deaf with Queens of the Stone Age. His metal project, Probot, featured Lemmy (Motorhead), Conrad Lant (Venom), King Diamond, and Max Cavalera (Sepultura). He also drummed with Tony Iommi, Tenacious D, Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, Juliette and the Licks, and Pete Yorn.

Foo Fighters collaborated with John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and Norah Jones on their fifth album, In Your Honor. Their sixth album, Echoes, Silences, Patience & Grace was released in late 2007. They toured supporting the album in 2008.
