Biography

Claude Hudson Trucks, better known as Butch Trucks, possesses the confidence gained being as rock drumming legend for more than thirty years. Butch Trucks grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and before he was 18 joined his first band The Vikings and recorded a 7" in 1964. Though Butch Trucks briefly attended Florida State in Tallahassee, he left in 1967 with a couple of friends and headed to Daytona to pursue a career in music. Butch Trucks and his friends formed a band but couldn't seem to find any gigs. However, Butch met Duane and Gregg Allman in Daytona. They jammed together in the late 60s, but Butch Trucks ultimately left Daytona and returned to Jacksonville.

After a magical five-hour jam session at Butch Trucks's home in Jacksonville with Butch, Duane, guitarist Dickey Betts, bassist Berry Oakley, and drummer Jai Johanny Johanson, The Allman Brothers Band was in motion. Duane's committment to the band inspired the other members to dedicate themselves to his vision. He invited his brother Gregg, who was in Los Angeles on a contract with Liberty, to join them in Jacksonville to round out the band. The Allman Brothers Band was officially born in 1969 and signed with Capricorn, Phil Walden's fledgling label that became a major force in the development of the Southern Rock revolution of the 1970s.

Despite the devastating losses of Duane Allman in 1971 and Berry Oakley the following year, The Allman Brothers Band attempted to forge on through death, personal conflicts, and drug abuse. Following Gregg's arrest on felony drug charges, the band, already splintered by individual solo careers, dismantled in 1976.

However, just two years later, The Allman Brothers Band reunited and added Dan Toler and David Goldflies to their lineup. Although their 1979 album Enlightened Rogues was strong, the band struggled to regain popularity. After financial struggles with Capricorn, the band signed with Arista in 1979 and released a pair of poorly-received albums. The Allman Brothers Band dismantled again in 1982, but they briefly reunited for a pair of benefit concerts in New York and Macon, Georgia.

With a few solo project wins and losses under their belts, the band finally got back together in 1989. They regained success during the 1990s with well-received albums, the addition of third drummer Marc Quinones, a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

The band experienced several lineup changes; Butch's nephew guitarist Derek Trucks joined the band in 1999 and in 2000 Dickey Betts left for "personal and professional reasons."

Still regularly performing, The Allman Brothers received more award nominations and recognitions in the last decade. Butch is still an integral member of the band as a leader of the rhythm section. Their onstage charisma has helped The Allman Brothers Band continuously earn new fans.
