Basic Background Info
Bob Gatzen is a renaissance man of modern music. He is a drummer, a producer, and an inventor.
Bob Gatzen studied under Joe Porcaro as a young man. He then attended the University of Hartford’s Hartt College of Music where he learned from vibist Al Lepak. Whilst studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, he worked closely with Gary Burton.
In the early 1970s, Bob and his wife created Creative Music Inc., a revolutionary education and sales outfit. They offered workshops, clinics, and live performances for aspiring musicians. Bob’s jazz ensemble often performed in the store with jazz greats from New York and Boston. He also organized performances of his improvisation percussion group, Spiral. While operating Creative Music, Bob began designing new products. His patented products are now sold by Evans Drumheads, Drum Workshop, Noble & Cooley, Zildjian Cymbal Co., Regal Tip Drumsticks, and DrumFrame Ltd. The DrumFrame is a seat designed to relieve tension on the body through hours of practice and performance.
Bob Gatzen also ventured into video production while working with Creative Music. He has produced video performances for Warner Brothers, Music Publishing, and Alfred Publishing.
Bob Gatzen’s most recent DVD, Drum Tuning, Sound, and Design, offers viewers Bob’s years of expertise in a comprehensive and practical approach to tuning drums. His technique is easy, straightforward, and effective for all styles of playing and levels of experience.
Recently, Bob Gatzen began working with START with the Arts, a program designed to promote creativity in young children. The program works towards education reform; envisioning a new role for creative arts in learning.
